he fears its harm.
If this caution is required with the fire of this world, it is even more necessary to guard against whatever may lead to the torment of the Fire in the Hereafter—sins themselves, the means that lead to them, and the avenues that open the way to them. For this reason the scholars—may Allah have mercy on them—say: “The means take the ruling of their ends, and the pretexts that lead to something forbidden must be blocked, lest one fall into ruin.” Allah is the grantor of success.
162 – Seventh: On his authority, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The likeness of what Allah has sent me with—guidance and knowledge—is that of a life-giving rain that fell upon the earth. A portion of the land was good; it absorbed the water and produced abundant herbage and grass. Another portion was hard ground; it held the water, and through it Allah benefited the people: they drank, provided drink, and irrigated their crops. A third portion consisted of barren plains; it neither retained the water nor produced vegetation. Such is the example of one who gains understanding of Allah’s religion and benefits from what Allah has sent me with—he learns and teaches—and the example of one who pays it no heed and does not accept the guidance with which I have been sent.” Agreed upon.
The verb faqiha (فقه) is most commonly read with a ḍamma on the qāf; it is also reported with a kasra, meaning “he became a jurist.”
