the guidance of indication, meaning that you point out the path for people; yet not everyone who is shown the path actually follows it. The guidance that Allah negated from His Messenger—“Indeed, you do not guide whom you love” (Quran 28:56)—is the guidance of granting success. No human being can confer that success upon another, even if the other is his own father, son, uncle, mother, maternal uncle, or grandmother. Whomever Allah leaves astray, none can guide.
Our duty, therefore, is to summon Allah’s servants to His religion, encourage them to embrace it, and clarify it for them. If they are guided, the benefit is for them and for us; if they are not, the proof is still established—we are rewarded while the burden rests upon them. Allah the Exalted says, “Ṭā-Sīn-Mīm. These are the verses of the clear Book. Perhaps you would destroy yourself with grief because they will not be believers” (Quran 26:1-3). In other words, you might wear yourself out with worry and sorrow if they do not believe—so do not do that. Guidance lies in Allah’s hand alone; discharge what is upon you and your responsibility is clear. Allah is the One who grants success.
Allah the Exalted also says, “And remember what is recited in your homes of Allah’s revelations and wisdom. Surely Allah is Ever-Subtle, All-Aware” (Quran 33:34).
