—consider phlegm, which inflicts the same harm on the mosque, or even worse. Moreover, some people carry thin hand-tissues, spit into them, and then throw them onto the mosque floor. That is pure abuse, and no doubt people are repelled when they see such a thing—how much more so when it occurs in one of Allah’s houses! Therefore, if you must expectorate into a tissue, keep it in your pocket until you leave, then dispose of it in the place set aside for that purpose, taking care not to harm anyone. Allah is the One who grants success.
120 – Fourth narration: It is reported from him that a number of people said, “Messenger of Allah, the wealthy have run off with all the rewards. They pray as we pray, fast as we fast, and give charity from the surplus of their wealth.” He replied, “Has not Allah given you that with which you can give charity? Every saying of ‘Subḥan Allah’ is charity; every ‘Allahu akbar’ is charity; every ‘al-ḥamdu lillāh’ is charity; every ‘Lā ilāha illā Allah’ is charity. Enjoining what is right is charity, forbidding what is wrong is charity, and even the intimate act one of you has with his spouse is charity.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, does one of us fulfill his desire and still receive a reward for it?” He said, “Tell me: if he were to place it in what is unlawful, would he not incur sin? Likewise, when he places it in what is lawful he receives a reward.” Related by Muslim.
