There are five conditions for repentance that have already been cited:

1. The first is to repent with sincere devotion to Allah.
2. The second is to feel genuine remorse for the sin one has committed.
3. The third is to abandon the sin immediately.
4. The fifth is that the repentance occur while its acceptance is still possible.

A person should frequently recite this remembrance while bowing and prostrating: subḥānaka allāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, allāhumma ighfir lī (Transcendent are You, O Allah, and all praise is Yours; O Allah, forgive me). It gathers together remembrance and supplication, and the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—used to repeat it often in his bowing and prostration after this surah was revealed. Allah alone grants success.
