—no more than the sea would be diminished were a sewing needle to be dipped into it. Put a needle into the ocean and see: what, exactly, does it take away? It reduces the sea by nothing at all, nor does the needle carry off anything that could even be credited to it. That is because Allah is vast in riches, bountiful, noble and generous.
“O My servants, it is only your deeds that I record for you; then I shall repay you for them in full.” The phrase “it is only your deeds” means that the whole matter turns on a person’s own actions: Allah enumerates those actions, and on the Day of Resurrection He will give them back to him. “So whoever does an atom’s weight of good shall see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil shall see it” (Al-Zalzalah 99:7-8). “Whoever, then, finds good, let him praise Allah; and whoever finds other than that, let him blame no one but himself,” for he alone is the one who erred and withheld good from himself. If he does find good, let him praise Allah, for Allah Most High has favored him twice: first by enabling the deed, and then by granting an ample reward for it—“Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten times its like, while whoever brings an evil deed shall be repaid only with its like” (Al-Anʿam 6:160).
This is a momentous hadith. Scholars have analysed it, extracting from it a host of benefits and rulings. Among those who devoted a separate work to it was Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 AH, may Allah have mercy on him), who expounded the hadith in an independent treatise. A person should therefore ponder this hadith and reflect on it deeply—especially its closing sentence, which states that a person will be recompensed according to his deeds: if his deeds are good, the outcome will be good; if they are evil, the outcome will be evil. For that reason the compiler placed this hadith in the chapter on striving against the soul, to show that one must strive against oneself, perform righteous deeds, and thus find with Allah something far better and a greater reward. Allah is the giver of success.
