Therefore, anything that harms our bodies or deprives them of any part is impermissible for us to do, because of Allah’s statement, “And do not kill yourselves” (al-Nisāʾ 4:29). Tobacco and every other harmful substance have been prohibited solely to protect the body, for the body is sacrosanct. Thus the Prophet’s ﷺ words, “your blood,” encompass the blood whose spillage leads to death—i.e., murder—and also bloodshed short of that, such as wounding, breaking a bone, and the like.
As for his ﷺ words, “and your property,” Allah, exalted is He, has forbidden any of us to take his brother’s wealth without right by any means whatsoever: by forceful seizure, theft, snatching, breach of trust, fraud, or lying. Whichever of these methods is used, it is unlawful.
Consequently, those who sell to people through deception—especially produce vendors—every sum they gain, indeed every single penny added to the price because of their cheating, is unlawful. Those who cheat in selling or buying commit two offenses:
First: they wrong their fellow Muslims by taking their wealth unjustly.
Second: they earn the Prophet’s ﷺ disavowal of them. How wretched a trade it is when its owner ends up disowned by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said in an authentic report, “Whoever cheats us is not one of us.”
