the Sunnah.
104 — The Tenth ḥadith: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Three follow the dead person: his family, his wealth, and his deeds. Two go back and one remains: his family and his wealth return, while his deeds stay with him.” Agreed upon.
Explanation
When a human being dies, those who escort him follow his bier. His relatives accompany him to the cemetery. How astonishing, how paltry, how lowly this worldly life is! The very people who love you most are the ones who undertake your burial: they inter you and remove you from their midst, and even if they were paid to keep your body among them, they would refuse. Those closest to you—who hold you dearest—are the ones who carry out your burial; they follow you and see you off.
His wealth follows him as well—that is, his slaves and household servants. The ḥadith portrays a wealthy man who owns servants; they come after him, and his deeds also accompany him. Then two turn back and leave him alone, but his deeds remain with him. We ask Allah to make our and your deeds righteous, for those deeds stay with him as his companion in his grave, keeping him company until the Day of Resurrection.
This ḥadith shows that the life of this world passes away: every adornment of worldly life departs and does not remain with you in the grave. Wealth and children, the adornment of worldly life, return,
