Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

the homeland, there would be no difference between our fighting and the fighting of an unbeliever for his own country. Even the unbeliever will fight for, and defend, his homeland.

Whoever is killed merely while defending the homeland is not a martyr. Our duty—as Muslims living, by Allah’s favour, in an Islamic land, and we ask Allah to keep us firm upon that—is to fight for Islam in our land. Take careful note of the distinction: we fight for Islam in our land, safeguarding the Islam that is here, and protecting Islam even were we in the farthest East or West. If our country lay at the ends of the earth, we would still fight for Islam in our homeland, or for our homeland because it is Islamic, defending the Islam it contains.

Simple nationalism, however, is a false intention that brings a person no benefit. There is no difference between someone who calls himself a Muslim and someone who calls himself an unbeliever if both are fighting only for the homeland because it is their homeland.

Whoever is slain solely in defence of the homeland is not a martyr. Yet what is incumbent upon us—Muslims who, praise be to Allah, reside in an Islamic land, and we ask Allah to keep us steadfast—is that we fight for Islam in our country. Mind the difference: we fight for Islam in our country, preserving Islam wherever it may be, in the farthest East or West. We fight for Islam, not merely for the homeland. Therefore this wording must be corrected. One should say: We fight for Islam in our homeland, or for our homeland because it is Islamic; we defend the Islam that is found within it.

As for sheer nationalism, it is an invalid intention that profits a person nothing, and there is no distinction between one who claims to be a Muslim and one who admits to being an unbeliever when the fighting is only for the homeland as such.

The statement often quoted—“Love of homeland is part of faith”—and presented as a hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a fabrication.

If you love your homeland because it is an Islamic land, then you love it for its Islam. There is no difference between the land of your birth and a distant land of the Muslims; all of it is the homeland of Islam, and we are obliged to protect it.
