But if the person is known for composure, fear of Allah, avoidance of harming people, and respect for regulations, and the incident occurred only because vigilance slipped, then pardoning him is preferable; for Allah says, “Whoever pardons and brings about reconciliation, his reward rests with Allah” (42:40). Therefore, one must take reform into account when extending pardon.
“Allah loves the doers of excellence” (3:134). To be loved by Allah, exalted is He, is the ultimate goal of every believer. Allah the Most High says, “Say, ‘If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you’” (3:31). He did not say, “Follow me so that your claim will be proven true”; instead He turned to the promise, “Allah will love you,” because the real issue—the entire issue—is that Allah should love you. I ask Allah to make me and you among those He loves.
The “doers of excellence” mentioned in His words “Allah loves the doers of excellence” are of two kinds: those who excel in worshipping Allah, and those who excel toward His servants.
Regarding excelling in worship, the Prophet ﷺ explained their rank when Gabriel asked him about ihsan (spiritual excellence). He replied, “That you worship Allah as though you see Him; for if you do not see Him, He certainly sees you.” This means worship Allah with a present heart—as though you are looking upon your Lord, striving to reach Him. If you cannot attain that state, then know that Allah sees you; so worship Him out of awe and reverent fear. This level is below the first.
