It is therefore incumbent upon anyone who sees people massing against him or showing him hostility to say: Hasbun Allah wa-niʿma al-wakīl (Allah is sufficient for us and He is the best trustee). Whoever says this will find that Allah wards off their harm, just as He protected Abraham and Muhammad—peace be upon them both. Keep this phrase constantly in mind: whenever you sense people’s aggression toward you, say: Ḥasbī Allah wa-niʿma al-wakīl (Allah is sufficient for me and He is the best trustee); Allah will shield you from their evil and their anxieties. Allah is the giver of success.
79—The Sixth ḥadīth
ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declare, “If you were to rely on Allah with the reliance He truly deserves, He would provide for you just as He provides for the birds: they depart in the morning with empty stomachs and return in the evening with full bellies.” Related by al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan (sound).
Its meaning: they set out at the start of the day khimāṣan—that is, with bellies drawn in from hunger—and they come back at day’s end biṭānan—meaning with bellies filled.
Explanation: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) urges his community to place their trust in Allah: “If you were to rely on Allah with the reliance He truly deserves,” that is, a genuine tawakkul, placing complete dependence upon Allah—exalted is He—for your provision and for all other matters, “He would sustain you just as He sustains the birds.”
