to undergo cauterization, meaning those who ask someone to brand them—and Allah alone grants success.
76 – Third: Ibn ʿAbbās ⦗may Allah be pleased with them⦘ narrated: “ ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best trustee.’ Abraham, peace be upon him, uttered these words when he was cast into the fire, and Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said them when the people said, ‘Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ but it only increased them in faith, and they replied, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best trustee.’ ” Reported by al-Bukhārī.
In another wording recorded by al-Bukhārī from Ibn ʿAbbās ⦗may Allah be pleased with them⦘: “The last words of Abraham, peace be upon him, when he was thrown into the fire were: ‘Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best trustee.’ ”
Commentary:
Abraham and Muhammad—may blessings and peace be upon them both—are the two khalīls of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Allah the Exalted says: “Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend” (al-Nisāʾ 4:125). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, likewise said: “Allah has taken me as an intimate friend just as He took Abraham as an intimate friend.”
The term khalīl denotes a beloved whose love has reached its highest degree, and we know of no one who has been described with this attribute except Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and Abraham; thus they are the two khalīls. Yet you will sometimes hear people say, “Abraham is the khalīl of Allah, Muhammad is the ḥabīb (beloved) of Allah, and Moses is the kalīm (the one to whom Allah spoke).”
