- Chapter on Certainty (yaqīn) and Reliance on Allah (tawakkul)
Allah the Exalted says:
“When the believers saw the confederate forces they said, ‘This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us; Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth,’ and it only increased them in faith and submission.” (al-Aḥzāb 33:22)
He also says:
“Those to whom people said, ‘The enemy has gathered against you, so fear them,’ but it only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us and what an excellent disposer of affairs He is.’ So they returned with grace and bounty from Allah; no harm touched them, and they sought the pleasure of Allah. Allah is the possessor of immense bounty.” (Āl ʿImrān 3:173-174)
And He says:
“Put your trust in the Ever-Living One who never dies.” (al-Furqān 25:58)
And:
“In Allah let the believers place their trust.” (Ibrāhīm 14:11)
And:
“When you have resolved, then place your trust in Allah.” (Āl ʿImrān 3:159)
The verses commanding reliance on Allah are many and well known.
He further says:
“Whoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him” (aṭ-Ṭalāq 65:3)—meaning He will be enough for him.
And He says:
“True believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble; when His verses are recited to them, they increase them in faith, and upon their Lord they rely.” (al-Anfāl 8:2)
The verses extolling reliance on Allah are likewise numerous and familiar.
Commentary: The author couples certainty with reliance because tawakkul is a fruit born of yaqīn. Certainty is the strength and firmness of faith: a state in which a person’s conviction is so intense that he sees with his own eyes what Allah informed His Messenger of. It is unwavering belief, admitting no doubt whatsoever, so that the unseen realities Allah—Exalted is He—conveyed to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, appear as though present before one’s very eyes. This is the highest rank of faith!
