Accordingly, good character—besides being a praiseworthy path in society that makes its possessor beloved to people—earns a tremendous reward that a person will receive on the Day of Resurrection. So memorize these three counsels from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: be mindful of Allah wherever you are; follow a bad deed with a good one and it will erase it; and treat people with excellent character. Allah alone grants success.

62. The third hadith: Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, “One day I was riding behind the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—when he said, ‘O young man, I shall teach you some words: Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you; be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah; when you seek help, seek help from Allah. Know that if the whole community were to unite to benefit you with something, they could never benefit you except with what Allah has already written for you. And if they were to unite to harm you with something, they could never harm you except with what Allah has already decreed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.’”
    This was related by al-Tirmidhī, who said, “A sound and good hadith.”
    In another narration, not recorded by al-Tirmidhī, it reads: “Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. Know Allah in times of ease and He will know you in times of hardship. Know that what missed you could never have struck you, and what struck you could never have missed you. And know that victory comes with patience, relief accompanies affliction, and with hardship comes ease.”
