Likewise, if you notice that the patient would like you to stay longer, then do so. You are engaged in a righteous deed and will be rewarded for it. Remain with him and bring joy to his heart; perhaps gladdening his heart will itself be a means for his recovery, for the cheerfulness and openness of a patient’s spirit are among the greatest factors that lead to healing. Therefore, if you see that he wants you to remain, stay with him and prolong your visit until you sense that he has become tired.
Conversely, if you perceive that the patient is merely putting on a brave face, does not wish you to stay, or prefers that you leave so his family may come and keep him company, then do not linger. Ask about his condition and then depart.
Among the lessons of this hadith is the noble character of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him. Without doubt, he possessed the finest character of all people, for Allah the Exalted says:
“Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe, by your Lord’s grace you are not mad; yours indeed shall be a reward unfailing, and truly you are upon an exalted standard of character” (Q 68:1-4).
The one with the greatest and most beautiful character, therefore, is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
Because of this, he would visit his Companions, inquire after them, and greet them with peace. He would even pass by small children and give them the greeting of peace—may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him.
Another benefit of this hadith is that a person should consult the people of knowledge. Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ (may Allah be pleased with him) sought the Prophet’s counsel when he wished to give some of his wealth in charity. He said, “Messenger of Allah, I have abundant wealth and only one daughter to inherit from me; shall I give away two-thirds of my property?” He replied, “No …” to the end of the narration.
In this lies proof that one should consult those who possess knowledge and sound judgment, each according to his expertise. So, if you intend to undertake a matter related to the religion, consult the scholars, for they are more knowledgeable about religious affairs than others.
