Allah!” Nothing restrained him from the deed except fear of Allah—Majestic and Exalted. Consider this man: every inducement to sin is present—he is fully able to have intercourse, the woman is beautiful and of high rank, the place is secluded—yet within him lies a deterrent stronger than all these causes: fear of Allah. He said, “Indeed, I fear Allah.” He did not say, “I have no desire for women,” nor did he say, “You are not attractive,” nor, “You are from the lower classes,” nor, “Someone might see us.” Rather, he said, “I fear Allah.” Such a person will be shaded by Allah in His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His.
Reflect also on Joseph son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham—peace be upon them all. The wife of the ‘Aziz, the ruler of Egypt, fell passionately in love with him. She was the consort of a king, endowed with beauty and refinement. She locked the doors between them and the people and said, “Come, you!” ⦗Yusuf 23⦘—that is, she invited him to herself. He was a young man; by human nature he desired her and she desired him. Yet he perceived the proof of his Lord, fear of Allah filled his heart, and he refrained. She threatened him with prison, whereupon he said, “My Lord, prison is dearer to me than that to which they invite me. If You do not turn their plot away from me, I may incline toward them and become one of the ignorant.” ⦗Yusuf 33⦘. So his Lord answered him and turned their plot away from him; truly, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. ⦗Yusuf 34⦘. Then, after they had seen the signs, it occurred to them that they should imprison him for a time. ⦗Yusuf 35⦘. Thus he was jailed for Allah’s sake and abstained from adultery even though every motive for it was present, for he beheld the evidence of his Lord and feared Allah.
Sixth: “A man who gives charity and conceals it so that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends.” This epitomizes sincerity: he dedicates the act solely to Allah, desiring that no one among the people become aware of any of his deeds; he wants it to remain solely between him and his Lord, and he does not
