and uncircumcised, empty-handed with no wealth whatsoever. All people—even the prophets and messengers—will be resurrected in this condition, just as Allah, the Exalted, says: “Just as We began the first creation, We shall repeat it” (al-Anbiyāʾ 21:104).

In the same way that a human being emerges from his mother’s womb naked, barefoot, uncircumcised, and possessing nothing, so will he come forth from the belly of the earth on the Day of Resurrection. Men and women, young and old, believers and disbelievers alike will all stand before the Lord of all worlds barefoot, uncircumcised, and empty-handed. No one will look at another, for the enormity of the Day will preoccupy every soul. A woman may be right beside a man, yet he will not glance at her, nor will she glance at him, as Allah—glorified be He—states: “But when the Deafening Blast comes, on that Day a man will flee from his brother, from his mother and his father, from his wife and his children; for every person, that Day, will be engrossed in a matter that concerns him alone” (ʿAbasa 80:33-37).

Among the beliefs pertaining to the Last Day is the conviction that Allah, exalted is He, will spread out the present earth and stretch it flat, just as a tanned hide is stretched. Our earth today is a spherical globe, slightly bulging at the south and north, yet still round, as the Qur’anic words indicate: “When the sky is split open, listens to its Lord and must do so, and when the earth is extended…” (al-Inshiqāq 84:1-3). The earth will not be extended until the sky is rent asunder—and that will be on the Day of Resurrection. Then the earth will be flattened like a spread-out leather, with no valleys, no trees, no dwellings, and no mountains. The Lord—mighty and majestic—is He—will leave it a smooth, level plain, “wherein you will see neither curve nor elevation.” Upon that plain the people will be gathered in the state just described. Meanwhile the heavens will be folded up; the Lord, almighty and exalted, will fold them in His right hand, and the sun will be brought near
