—and the pronunciation with ḍamma is the more common, signifying what is almost enough to fill the earth.
1879 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “O assembly of women, give in charity and seek forgiveness abundantly, for I have seen that you constitute the majority of the people of Hell.” One of the women asked, “Why is it that we are the majority of the people of Hell?” He replied, “You frequently utter curses and you are ungrateful to your husbands. I have never seen anyone, deficient in reason and religion, who can overpower a man of sound judgment more than you.” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is the deficiency in our reason and our religion?” He answered, “A woman’s testimony is equal to half of a man’s testimony, and she may spend several days without praying.” Related by Muslim.
Explanation
Al-Nawawī (may Allah have mercy on him) gathered many hadiths in his book Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn that deal with seeking forgiveness and encouraging it. Among them is the divine statement in which Allah, exalted is He, says: “O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and place your hope in Me, I will forgive you,” meaning that no matter how often you invoke Me and hope in Me, I will forgive you. This is because Allah treats His servant according to the servant’s own expectation of Him, as is affirmed in the sacred hadith related by the Prophet ﷺ from his Lord: “I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him whenever he remembers Me. If he remembers Me inwardly, I remember him inwardly; and if he remembers Me in an assembly, I remember him in an assembly better than it.”
