Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

—which first grows in the earth and then pushes its shoot above the surface. In the very same way they will spring forth; then the Trumpet will be blown a second time, and at that blast every soul in the universe will emerge by Allah’s permission. Each soul will go straight to the body it once inhabited in worldly life, missing it not in the least.

Glory be to Allah! “Between the two blasts there are forty.” People asked Abu Hurayrah, “Forty days?” He replied, “I refrain,” meaning that he did not know. They asked, “Forty years?” He said, “I refrain.” They asked, “Forty months?” He said, “I refrain.” The Prophet ﷺ had said only, “Between them are forty.” We therefore affirm exactly what the Messenger ﷺ said, and Allah knows best.

This, then, is the blowing of the Trumpet. Afterward people will rise for the Day of Reckoning before the Lord of all creation, and He will call each of them to account for his sins. His reckoning—majestic and exalted is He—revolves between grace and justice; there will be no injustice whatsoever, for judgment can involve injustice, justice, or grace, and His reckoning is ever between grace and justice. Allah the Exalted says: “Today no soul will be wronged in the least, nor will you be repaid except for what you used to do” [Q 36:54].

As for the second hadith, it relates to the bedouin who came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked, “When is the Hour?” The Prophet ﷺ was in the midst of speaking to his Companions, so he continued his discourse and did not wish to interrupt it. Apparently—and Allah knows best—it was one continuous talk. Some people said, “He heard what the man said but disliked it.” When the one addressed dislikes the question posed, there is no blame upon him if he chooses not to answer, even though he heard it, for the questioner may lack wisdom and ask something inappropriate; the respondent may therefore leave it unanswered. Others said, “Perhaps he did not hear him.” When the Prophet ﷺ had finished his speech he asked, “Where is the questioner?” The man replied, “Here I am, O Messenger of Allah.”
