1828 – Mirdas al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The righteous will depart, one after another, and there will remain only refuse like the refuse of barley or dates; Allah will not care about them in the least.” Narrated by al-Bukhari.
1829 – Rifaʿah ibn Rafiʿ al-Zuraqi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Gabriel came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, “How do you regard the people of Badr among you?” He replied, “They are among the best of the Muslims,” or words to that effect. Gabriel said, “And those angels who took part in Badr are of the same rank among the angels.” Narrated by al-Bukhari.
1830 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “When Allah sends a punishment upon a people, it strikes everyone who is among them, and thereafter they will be resurrected according to their deeds.” Agreed upon.
[Explanation]
These are additional narrations that Imam al-Nawawi cited near the end of his book Riyad al-Salihin as supplementary material. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) states that the righteous will depart first, one after another, leaving behind people who are no more than dregs—the chaff of barley or dates—whom Allah neither regards nor envelops in mercy. Thus, the righteous leave this world first. This narration resembles the hadith of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) when people came to him complaining about what they were suffering at the hands of al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf al-Thaqafi.
