The buyer said to the seller, “Take back your gold, for I purchased the land from you; I did not buy the gold.” The seller replied, “I sold you the land and everything that is in it.” They therefore brought the matter before a judge, who asked them, “Do either of you have children?” One said, “I have a son,” and the other said, “I have a daughter.” The judge ruled, “Marry the boy to the girl, support them both from this wealth, and give the rest in charity.” Agreed upon.
1827 – Abu Hurayrah reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “Two women were traveling with their two sons when a wolf came and carried off the child of one of them. Each woman said to the other, ‘It is your son whom the wolf has taken.’ They referred the case to David, peace be upon him, and he judged in favor of the elder woman. They then went to Solomon son of David, peace be upon them both, and informed him of what had happened. Solomon said, ‘Bring me a knife so that I may cut the child in two and give each of you a part.’ The younger woman cried out, ‘Do not do that—may Allah have mercy on you! He is her son.’ Solomon therefore ruled that the child belonged to the younger woman.” Agreed upon.
Explanation
In this chapter, which al-Nawawi—may Allah have mercy on him—placed in his book Riyad al-Salihin under the section of “miscellaneous selections and narrations,” he previously mentioned accounts of the Antichrist (al-Dajjal) and Gog and Magog, and he cited in this gathering hadiths indicating that the Prophetic City—may Allah increase it in honor and reverence—will one day be abandoned by its inhabitants.
