take them lightly, nor should he let a sense of security from Allah’s scheme overcome him. Satan beguiles some people and whispers, “Commit the sin, then seek forgiveness; go ahead and sin, for Allah’s mercy precedes His wrath; sin, for Allah Himself has said, ‘Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wills’ (Q 4:48).” Thus he lulls them with other false hopes, for “Satan promises them nothing but delusion” (Q 4:120).
Therefore, it is obligatory to beware of everything Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. The author—may Allah have mercy on him—supports this with verses from the Book of Allah, among them the Almighty’s words: “Let those who oppose his command beware, lest a trial afflict them or a painful punishment befall them” (Q 24:63).
“Let those who oppose his command beware” refers to the command of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. To “oppose his command” means to turn away from it, make light of it, and knowingly violate it. They must beware “lest a trial afflict them or a painful punishment befall them”: a trial lodged in their hearts—Allah’s refuge is sought—whereby doubts are cast into matters that require certainty, or desires are stirred for what is forbidden.
For this reason Imam Ahmad—may Allah have mercy on him—said, “Do you know what the trial (fitnah) is in His saying, ‘lest a trial afflict them’? The trial is polytheism. A person may reject part of the Prophet’s words, and some deviation may settle in his heart, leading to his ruin—Allah’s protection is sought.”
So beware the trial; beware of contravening the command of Allah and His Messenger, lest a trial befall you “or a painful punishment”—a torment that brings suffering, whether in this world or in the Hereafter.
Allah the Exalted also says, “Allah warns you about Himself” (Q 3:28), meaning: fear Allah, for He is severe in punishment, as He likewise says, “Inform My servants that I am indeed the All-Forgiving, the Ever-Merciful, and…"
