and they regarded remaining silent until nightfall as an act of worship to Allah: a person would rise from his night’s sleep and then keep completely silent, not uttering a word until the sun set. Islam forbade the Muslims from this practice, for it leads to neglecting glorification of Allah, proclaiming His oneness, praising Him, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, reciting the Quran, and other righteous deeds. In addition, it was one of the customs of the Age of Ignorance, and for that reason it was prohibited. It is therefore unlawful for someone to stay silent until nightfall—that is, to refrain from speech until evening. Should a person make a vow to do so, he must not carry out the vow; rather, he should revoke it and offer the expiation for breaking an oath. When one does speak, he should speak only what is good, in keeping with the Prophet’s ﷺ words: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” Allah is the One who grants success.
