Chapter: The prohibition of squandering wealth on purposes other than those sanctioned by Islamic law
1781 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah, Exalted be He, is pleased for you with three things and He dislikes for you three things. He dislikes for you idle, gossip-filled talk, excessive questioning, and wasting wealth.” Reported by Muslim, and its commentary has already been given.
1782 – Warrad, the scribe of al-Mughīra ibn Shuʿba, said: “Al-Mughīra ibn Shuʿba dictated to me in a letter he sent to Muʿāwiya (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say after every prescribed prayer: ‘There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. O Allah, none can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and possessions can avail nothing against You.’ He also wrote to him that the Prophet forbade idle gossip, wasting wealth, and asking too many questions; he likewise forbade disobeying mothers, burying daughters alive, and the attitude of “withhold and demand.” Agreed upon, and its explanation has previously been mentioned.
