the image under discussion is a sculpted relief, something one can actually feel. The French riyal, for instance, carries the portrait of a European monarch and even the likeness of birds. The British pound shows the image of one of Britain’s leaders, as well as a horse with a mounted rider. These impressions can be felt with the hand, almost as though they were three-dimensional; yet the scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, did not forbid such coins because people have no choice in the matter—you cannot simply throw your money away. It is a genuine necessity. The same applies to identity cards and wallets: all of these fall under what pressing need or outright necessity requires. “Allah does not burden any soul beyond what it can bear” (Q 2:286), and “He has not placed upon you in the religion any hardship” (Q 22:78). Items of this kind do not prevent the angels from entering a house.

Objects that are not treated with respect—that is, that are trodden on or otherwise humbled—such as pictures woven into carpets or printed on cushions. These likewise do not keep the angels away, for they are permissible according to most scholars. Nonetheless, avoiding them is safer and better, because some jurists still count them among the forbidden images even when they are degraded, while the majority do not. For example, if a person owns a blanket bearing the picture of a lion and spreads it on the floor to lie on, there is no harm. But if he places it where he merely steps over it, this no longer counts as humiliation, so the ruling changes.

Children’s images and toys. Pictures and figurines that children play with are also given leeway, and the angels do not refrain from entering a house that contains them. ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, had a doll she played with in the Prophet’s house, peace and blessings be upon him, and he did not censure it.
That said, one should avoid modern plastic dolls, for they are perfect likenesses—even down to the eyelashes. Some have glass beads that rotate as eyes; others can take a few steps or make sounds. There is real fear that such complete figures fall under the prohibition and that the angels would not enter a house where they are kept.
As for the most recent kinds of images now being used—praise be to Allah—they are more like
