Chapter: The prohibition of depicting living creatures on a carpet, a stone, a garment, a dirham, a dinar, a pillow, a cushion, and the like; the prohibition of keeping images on walls, ceilings, and similar places; and the command to destroy such images.
1678 – Ibn ʿUmar (Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Those who fashion these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection. It will be said to them, ‘Give life to what you have created.’” Agreed upon.
1679 – ʿĀʾishah (Allah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from a journey, and I had hung a curtain over a recess of mine, a curtain that contained figures. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, his face changed color and he said, ‘O ʿĀʾishah, the people who will receive the most severe punishment from Allah on the Day of Resurrection are those who try to rival Allah’s creation.’ So we tore it up and made from it one—or two—cushions.” Agreed upon.
Al-qarām, with a kasrah on the qāf, means “curtain.” Al-suhwah, with a fatḥah on the sīn, is a small room or recess at the front of a house; some say it is an opening that passes through a wall.
1680 – Ibn ʿAbbās (Allah be pleased with them) said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, ‘Every image-maker will be in the Fire; for every image he made a soul will be fashioned, and that soul will punish him.’”
