Chapter: The Prohibition of At-Tatayyur (Belief in Evil Omens)
The reports relevant to this subject are the same as those cited in the preceding chapter.
1674 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “There is no ‘adwā (contagion that operates by itself) and no tiyarah (evil omen), yet I am pleased with faʾl (optimism).” They asked, “What is faʾl?” He replied, “A good word.” Agreed upon.
1675 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “There is no ‘adwā and no tiyarah; but if ill fortune were ever to exist in anything, it would be found in a dwelling, a woman, or a horse.” Agreed upon.
1676 – Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ did not take evil omens. Related by Abū Dāwūd with an authentic chain.
1677 – ʿUrwah ibn ʿĀmir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Omen-taking was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whereupon he said, “The best form of it is faʾl (optimism), and it must not turn a Muslim back. If any of you sees something he dislikes, let him say: ‘O Allah, none brings good but You, and none wards off evil but You; there is no might and no power except through You.’” A sound hadith, transmitted by Abū Dāwūd with an authentic chain.
