- Abu Hurayra reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say,
“The first of mankind to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was killed in battle. He will be brought forward, and Allah will show him His favor, which he will acknowledge. Allah will ask, ‘What did you do with it?’ He will answer, ‘I fought for Your sake until I was martyred.’ Allah will say, ‘You have lied; you fought only so that people would say, “He is daring,” and they have said it.’ Then He will command that he be dragged on his face until he is thrown into the Fire.
“Next will be brought a man who had learned knowledge, taught it, and recited the Quran. Allah will show him His favors, which he will acknowledge. Allah will ask, ‘What did you do with them?’ He will reply, ‘I acquired knowledge, taught it, and recited the Quran for Your sake.’ Allah will say, ‘You have lied; you did all that so people would say, “He is a scholar and a reciter,” and they have said it.’ Then He will command that he be dragged on his face until he is cast into the Fire.
“Then a man upon whom Allah had bestowed affluence and every kind of wealth will be brought forward. Allah will show him His favors, which he will acknowledge. Allah will ask, ‘What did you do with them?’ He will say, ‘I did not leave any avenue in which You love spending without spending in it for Your sake.’ Allah will say, ‘You have lied; you only did that so people would say, “He is generous,” and they have said it.’ Then He will command that he be dragged on his face until he is thrown into the Fire.”
