60- As for the hadiths, the first is narrated by ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him):
“While we were sitting in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day, a man appeared before us whose clothes were dazzlingly white and whose hair was intensely black. No sign of travel showed upon him, yet none of us knew him. He came and sat down facing the Prophet ﷺ, placed his knees against the Prophet’s knees, rested his palms on his own thighs, and said, ‘O Muhammad, inform me about Islam.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, ‘Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; to establish the prayer; to give the zakāh; to fast in Ramadan; and to make pilgrimage to the House if you are able to find a way to it.’
The man said, ‘You have spoken the truth.’ We were astonished that he would ask a question and then confirm the answer!
He then said, ‘Inform me about faith (imān).’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in destiny, both its good and its bad.’ He said, ‘You have spoken the truth.’
He said, ‘Inform me about excellence (iḥsān).’ He answered, ‘It is to worship Allah as though you see Him; for if you do not see Him, He certainly sees you.’
He said, ‘Inform me about the Hour.’ He replied, ‘The one who is questioned about it knows no more than the questioner.’
He said, ‘Then inform me about its signs.’ He said, ‘That a slave woman will give birth to her mistress, and that you will see the barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in the construction of lofty buildings.’
Then the man left, and I remained for a while. The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘O ʿUmar, do you know who the questioner was?’ I replied, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He said, ‘That was Gabriel; he came to teach you your religion.’ ” (Related by Muslim).
The phrase “that a slave woman will give birth to her mistress” means her female master. Its import is that concubines will become widespread.
