whoever turns a living creature into a target.” Agreed upon.
al-gharaḍ (target): with a voiced ghayn and a rā’; it is the mark—the object at which one shoots.
1602 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade that animals be held in restraint awaiting death.” Agreed upon.
Its meaning: that they are confined so they can be killed.
1603 – Abū ʿAlī Suwayd ibn Muqarrin (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I once found myself the seventh of seven brothers from Banū Muqarrin. We had no servant but one, and the youngest of us slapped her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to set her free.” Narrated by Muslim.
In another wording: “the seventh of my brothers.”
[Commentary]
In this chapter the author—may Allah have mercy on him—cites in Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn the prohibition of tormenting an animal, a child, a parent, or anyone under one’s authority, for it is forbidden to inflict harm upon them by beating or otherwise except for a lawful, sharʿī cause.
