The matter concerns the worker himself, for the employer says to him, “Either you work for four hundred, or I will send you back.” Yet he had originally hired him for six hundred and never paid him, so he is squarely included in this grave warning. The same applies to those who bring in laborers and fail to give them their wages, or who import them with no real job, abandon them in the markets, and tell them, “Go out and whatever you earn, half of it is mine,” or, for example, “Go out and each month you owe me three hundred or four hundred riyals.” All of this is unlawful—Allah’s refuge is sought—and it is not permissible for them. Whatever they consume is sheer suḥt (illicit wealth), and every body that is nourished by suḥt, the Fire is most deserving of it. Those who swallow the earnings of these poor workers—their supplications are not accepted, Allah’s refuge is sought. They call upon Allah but He does not answer them, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, described a man who embarks on a long journey, disheveled and dusty, raising his hands toward the sky, crying, “My Lord, my Lord,” while his food is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he has been sustained on what is unlawful—so how can he be answered? What these people consume from the laborers’ wages, or what they oppressively withhold from them, they are devouring as pure suḥt. We ask Allah for safety.
A person must therefore fear Allah. I know that you will convey this to those tyrants—Allah’s refuge is sought—whom Allah has already afflicted with an immediate punishment. What is that immediate punishment? That they find this deed palatable, persist in it, and remain obstinate. Persistence in sin is itself a punishment—Allah’s refuge is sought. If Allah does not grant a person the favor of repenting from a sin, then know that his continuation in that sin is a punishment from Allah: with every sin he only grows farther from Allah, his misdeeds only increase, and his faith only diminishes.
So we ask Allah for guidance and success for ourselves and for them.
