1585 – Ibn Masʿūd, Ibn ʿUmar, and Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Every treacherous person will have a banner on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be proclaimed, ‘This is the betrayal of so-and-so.’” Agreed upon.
1586 – Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Every treacherous person will have a banner fastened to his backside on the Day of Resurrection; it will be raised in proportion to the magnitude of his treachery. Indeed, no betrayer is more grievously treacherous than a leader over the public.” Narrated by Muslim.
1587 – Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: Allah the Exalted declares, “There are three against whom I shall be an adversary on the Day of Resurrection: a man who, after swearing by Me, proves treacherous; a man who sells a free person and consumes the price; and a man who hires a laborer, takes full work from him, yet withholds his wage.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
[Explanation]
The author, in his book Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, entitled this chapter “The Prohibition of Treachery.” We have already discussed its meaning and the first verse with which he opened the chapter: “O you who believe, fulfill all contracts.” The second verse is Allah’s statement: “Fulfill the covenant, for the covenant shall be questioned about.” Here Allah commands that every covenant be honored. That is, if you strike an agreement with someone and say, “It is upon the covenant of Allah that I will not do such-and-such,” or, “I will not disclose what you have told me,” and the like, you are obligated to keep that covenant, for you will be asked about it on the Day of Resurrection. Hence He said: “Fulfill the covenant, for the covenant shall be questioned about,” meaning that it will be inquired into on the Day of Resurrection.
The author then cited ḥadiths whose explanations we have previously covered. The weightiest of them states that a banner will be erected for every betrayer on the Day of Resurrection. A lawāʾ (banner) is what is raised in war like a standard. For every betrayer a banner will be hoisted beneath his backside—Allah protect us—under his seat, and that banner will rise—
