nor to the One who created us. So pass whatever sentence you wish.” (Ṭā Hā 20:72)
Look at faith once it enters the heart! The whole world becomes insignificant to its bearer. “Fa-qḍi mā anta qāḍ (So decree whatever you are going to decree)”—that is, do as you please—“innamā taqḍī hādhihi l-ḥayāta d-dunyā (all you can decide concerns this worldly life).” Even if your verdict is that we leave this world, “innā āmannā bi-rabbinā li-yaghfira lanā khaṭāyānā wa mā akrahtanā ʿalayhi mina s-siḥr (we have believed in our Lord so that He may forgive us our sins and the magic to which you compelled us),” for he had forced them to confront Moses, “wa-llāhu khayrun wa-abqā (whereas Allah is better and everlasting)” (Ṭā Hā 20:73).
When faith and unshakeable certainty settle in a heart, nothing can lure it away. Remember: those sorcerers were Pharaoh’s own troops. At the start of the day they were unbelieving magicians; by day’s end they were righteous believers defying Pharaoh because of the faith that had taken root in them. In the end he assembled the masses, declaring that he would eliminate Moses. Moses therefore departed with his people, fleeing—by Allah’s command—toward the Red Sea, known as Baḥr al-Qulzum, traveling east so that Egypt lay behind them to the west. When they reached the water, Pharaoh with his vast forces and mighty battalions was behind them and the sea lay before them.
“Qāla aṣḥābu Mūsā innā la-mudrakūn (Moses’ companions said, ‘We shall certainly be overtaken!’): the sea in front of us, Pharaoh and his army behind us—where can we flee?
“Qāla kallā inna maʿī rabbī sayahdīn (He replied, ‘No indeed! My Lord is with me; He will guide me’)” (Ash-Shuʿarāʾ 26:62). O Allah, bless him and grant him peace. Such is the certainty of the Messengers—peace be upon them—in the most critical and trying moments: a conviction that turns what seems impossible into something easy and straightforward—“My Lord is with me; He will guide me.”
When he consigned the matter to Allah—glorified and exalted be He—Allah revealed to him: Strike the Red Sea with your staff. He struck it once, and the water split into twelve paths, because the Children of Israel were—
