Chapter: The Duty to Verify Whatever One Says or Relates
Allah the Exalted says: “Do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge” (al-Isrāʾ 17:36). And He says: “He utters no word but that beside him is a watcher ready to record” (Qāf 50:18).
1547 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “It is enough for a person to be counted a liar that he repeats everything he hears.” Reported by Muslim.
1548 – Samura b. Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Whoever relates a statement from me while thinking it to be false is one of the two liars.” Reported by Muslim.
1549 – Asmāʾ (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that a woman asked, “Messenger of Allah, I have a co-wife; would I be blameworthy if I make my husband think I have received from him what he has not actually given me?” He replied, “The one who pretends to have been given what she was not given is like a person wearing two garments of falsehood.” Agreed upon.
al-mutashabbiʿ: one who feigns satiety though he is not in fact satisfied. In the present context it refers to someone who claims a merit he does not possess. “Wearing two garments of falsehood” means wearing clothing emblematic of deceit.
