know anything of our religion,” as narrated by al-Bukhari.
Al-Layth ibn Saʿd, one of the transmitters of this report, said, “Those two men were hypocrites.”
1533 – Fatimah bint Qays, may Allah be pleased with her, recounted: “I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, ‘Abu al-Jahm and Muʿawiyah have both proposed marriage to me.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, ‘As for Muʿawiyah, he is a pauper with no wealth; and as for Abu al-Jahm, he never sets his staff down from his shoulder.’” Agreed upon.
In another version recorded by Muslim: “As for Abu al-Jahm, he is a striker of women,” which explains the phrase, “he never sets his staff down from his shoulder.” It has also been said that the phrase means he is often away on travels.
1534 – Zayd ibn Arqam, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “We travelled with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey during which the people suffered hardship. ʿAbd Allah ibn Ubayy said, ‘Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse,’ and he added, ‘If we return to Madinah, the honored will surely expel the disgraced from it.’ I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him of what he had said. He then sent for ʿAbd Allah ibn Ubayy, who swore emphatically that he had not done so. The people said, ‘Zayd has lied to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,’ and their words weighed heavily on me until Allah revealed my vindication: ‘When the hypocrites come to you…’ (Qur’an 63:1). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then summoned them so that he might seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away.” Agreed upon.
