and do not let your tongue slip, lest you perish. May Allah shield us from disobeying Him and enable us to do what pleases Him. Truly, He is capable of all things.
1516 – Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Bilāl ibn al-Ḥārith al-Muzanī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A person may utter a word that earns Allah’s good pleasure, without imagining that it would reach the degree it does, yet because of it Allah records His pleasure for him until the day he meets Him. And a person may utter a word that incurs Allah’s wrath, without imagining that it would reach the degree it does, yet because of it Allah records His wrath for him until the day he meets Him.” Narrated by Mālik in al-Muwaṭṭaʾ and by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and good) hadith.”
Sufyān ibn ʿAbd Allāh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me something I can hold on to.” He replied, “Say, ‘My Lord is Allah,’ and then remain upright.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you fear most for me?” He took hold of his own tongue and said, “This.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: “A ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and good) hadith.”
1518 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not indulge in much talk that does not involve the remembrance of Allah. Excessive talk without the remembrance of Allah causes the heart to grow hard, and the person farthest from Allah is the one whose heart is hard.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī.
