woe to him, again woe to him.”
Some people actually do this and call it “jokes”; they spin lies merely to make others laugh. That is a mistake. If you wish to cheer people up, use lawful words, for lying speech is forbidden.
The author next cites the ḥadith of Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī . The Prophet ﷺ was asked, “Which Muslim is best?”—that is, which of the Muslims is superior. He replied, “The one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.” In other words, he does not wrong them with his tongue through backbiting, tale-bearing, insults, or anything similar, nor with his hand by seizing their wealth or striking their bodies. Rather, he is restrained and just, bringing people nothing but good. Such a person is the true Muslim. This ḥadith therefore urges you to keep others safe from both your tongue and your hand: guard your tongue and speak about Allah’s servants only in what is good; guard your hand and do not encroach upon their property or their persons. Be harmless so that people feel secure around you; that is the best of Muslims.
1513 – Sahl ibn Saʿd reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever guarantees for me what is between his jaws and what is between his legs, I will guarantee for him Paradise.” Agreed upon.
1514 – Abū Hurayrah narrated that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “A servant may utter a single word without reflecting on it, and because of it he falls into the Fire farther than the distance between the east….”
