preceded us in faith.’” (Q 59:10)

These are the third category among the three whom Allah mentions:

“For the poor Emigrants who were driven from their homes and their wealth, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure, and who support Allah and His Messenger—it is they who are the truthful.” (Q 59:8)

Thus Allah characterized them by emigration and support.

The second category is described in His words: “And those who had settled in the town and had embraced faith before them love those who have emigrated to them; they find no jealousy in their hearts for what they have been given, and they prefer them to themselves even though they are in need. Whoever is safeguarded from the greed of his own soul—it is they who are the successful.” (Q 59:9)
