if You release it, then protect it with the protection You grant to Your righteous servants.’ Agreed upon.
Explanation
These two hadiths clarify what a person should say when he is about to sleep. The first is the report of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad (may Allah be pleased with her)—and may Allah bless and grant peace to her father. The occasion was that Fāṭimah complained to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about the strain she suffered from turning the hand-mill, a tool for grinding grain, and she asked her father for a servant. He, peace be upon him, said, “Shall I not direct the two of you to something better than a servant?” He then instructed them that when they retired to their bed and lay down they should recite tasbīḥ (Subḥān Allah) thirty-three times, taḥmīd (Al-ḥamdu lillāh) thirty-three times, and takbīr (Allāhu akbar) thirty-four times, adding, “That is better for you than a servant.” Accordingly, it is recommended for anyone who lies down to sleep to say tasbīḥ thirty-three times, taḥmīd thirty-three times, and takbīr thirty-four times—a total of one hundred repetitions. This helps a person in meeting his daily needs, and it also ensures that he drifts off while remembering Allah, Exalted is He.
Similarly, the hadith of Abū Hurayrah teaches that when someone intends to sleep he should shake out his bed with the inside of his lower garment three times. The “inside of the garment” is the edge that lies next to the body, and the wisdom in this—Allah knows best—is to keep the garment from being soiled by anything harmful that might be in the bed. Then he should say: “In Your name, O Allah, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it; if You take my soul, then forgive it and have mercy on it, and if You release it, then protect it with the protection You grant to Your righteous servants.” And that
