Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

nothing would have harmed you.” Reported by Muslim.

1453 – From the same Companion: The Prophet ﷺ used to say upon entering the morning, “O Allah, by Your leave we have reached the morning, by Your leave we have reached the evening, by Your leave we live and by Your leave we die, and to You is the resurrection.” When evening came he would say, “O Allah, by Your leave we have reached the evening, by Your leave we live and by Your leave we die, and to You is the final return.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it sound (ḥasan).

[Commentary]
These three hadiths are cited by Imām al-Nawawī (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, under the chapter “Remembrance in the Morning and the Evening.”

The first relates the merit of a person’s saying “Subḥāna-Allāh wa bi-ḥamdih” one hundred times. Whoever repeats it one hundred times on reaching the morning and one hundred times on reaching the evening, no one will appear on the Day of Resurrection with anything better than what he brings, except someone who has done more. The phrase “Subḥāna-Allāh wa bi-ḥamdih” means that you declare Allah Exalted free of everything unbefitting His majesty, praise Him, and ascribe to Him the attributes of perfection embodied in the words “wa bi-ḥamdih.” Therefore, a person should say “Subḥāna-Allāh wa bi-ḥamdih” one hundred times in the morning and one hundred times in the evening so that he may obtain the virtue mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ.

Included as well is that a person, on entering the morning and the evening, says, “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah…"
