Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

It likewise contains sending peace upon the Prophet ﷺ, then invoking blessings upon him, and only after that making one’s supplication. Thus the ḥadith of Faḍālah ibn ʿUbayd should be understood in this way: the supplication in question is the supplication said inside the prayer, and it is preceded first by the tashahhud, then by the greeting of peace and the blessing upon the Prophet ﷺ, and then by the supplication. Allah is the One who grants success.

It is permissible to offer either the greeting of peace or the invocation of blessings separately, but the more virtuous course is to combine the two.

1405 – Abu Muḥammad Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: The Prophet ﷺ came out to us and we said, “O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you with peace; but how shall we invoke blessings upon you?” He replied, “Say: ‘O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad just as You sent blessings upon the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad just as You blessed the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious.’” Agreed upon.

1406 – Abu Masʿūd al-Badrī, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us while we were in the gathering of Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah. Bishr ibn Saʿd said, “O Messenger of Allah, Allah has commanded us to invoke blessings upon you; how should we do so?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent until we wished he had not asked. Then he said, “Say: ‘O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon the family of Abraham, and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Abraham. You are indeed Praiseworthy, Glorious.’ As for the salutation of peace, offer it as you have already been taught.” Reported by Muslim.
