This narration showcases the Prophet’s ﷺ outstanding pedagogical skill: he would clarify abstract ideas by comparing them to concrete, sensible realities, for what is tangible is easier to grasp than what is merely conceptual. The Quran is replete with such parables—for example, “The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is that of a grain…” (Quran 2:261). Had the verse simply stated, “Whoever spends a single grain in Allah’s cause will receive seven hundred grains,” it would not settle in the mind as firmly as the parable does; an image a person can picture becomes deeply rooted. Allah the Exalted also says, “We set forth these parables for people so that they may reflect” (Quran 29:43). Thus, casting matters in parables brings knowledge closer, anchors it more securely, and aids understanding. For this reason, when you address an unlearned person who fails to comprehend, give him an example—one drawn from something he already perceives and knows—so that he can grasp the abstract through the concrete. Allah is the One who grants success.
