and with one’s life: he goes out himself to fight; and with the tongue: he lampoons them—that is, the polytheists—with poems and verses, for satirising the polytheists wounds them and leaves upon them an enduring reproach, unless Allah wills otherwise. The ḥadiths the author (may Allah have mercy on him) has cited here show the virtue of jihad in the path of Allah and that it ranks among the finest of deeds. Numerous reports on this theme have already been mentioned, and the author prolonged his quotations because the chapter of jihad is one of the most important areas of the religion. The Prophet ﷺ even said, “Its summit”—meaning the summit of Islam—“is jihad in Allah’s path,” for through it the word of Allah is elevated, Islam and the Muslims are granted victory, and many other enormous benefits are attained. Allah alone grants success.
