1315 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his Companions set out until they reached Badr ahead of the idolaters. When the idolaters arrived, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced, “Let no one among you advance toward anything until I myself have gone first.” As the enemy drew near, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out, “Rise up to a Garden whose breadth is the heavens and the earth!” ʿUmayr ibn al-Ḥumām al-Anṣārī (may Allah be pleased with him) exclaimed, “Messenger of Allah, a Garden whose breadth is the heavens and the earth?” He replied, “Yes.” ʿUmayr responded, “Bakh! Bakh!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “What makes you say ‘Bakh! Bakh!’?” He answered, “By Allah, Messenger of Allah, nothing but the hope that I will be among its people.” The Prophet said, “You are one of its people.” ʿUmayr then took some dates from his qarn (a quiver for arrows) and began to eat them, but soon remarked, “If I stay alive long enough to finish these dates, that would indeed be a long life.” He hurled the dates aside, fought the enemy, and was killed. 1316 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) also reported: Some people came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Send with us men who will teach us the Quran and the Sunnah.” He therefore sent seventy men from the Anṣār who were called “the Reciters”; among them was my uncle Ḥarām. They would recite the Quran, study it together at night, and learn it. During the daytime they would bring water and place it in the mosque, gather firewood and sell it, and with the proceeds buy food for the people of al-Ṣuffah and for the poor. The Prophet ﷺ dispatched them, but they were ambushed and killed before they reached their destination. As death approached they said, “O Allah, convey to our Prophet that we have met You, and we are pleased with You and You are pleased with us.” A man then approached Ḥarām, the uncle of Anas, from behind and pierced him with a spear until it passed through his body. Ḥarām cried out, “By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, I have triumphed!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Your brothers have been killed, and they said, ‘O Allah…’”
