“O you who believe! Shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment?”
The Almighty opens these verses with this noble summons to the believers in order to stir their energy and spur them to welcome what they hear from the speech of Allah.
Again He says, “O you who believe! Shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment?” The Speaker is our Lord, exalted be He, and this interrogative form is meant to attract our attention and kindle our desire for the transaction to which He is directing us. From the phrase “Shall I guide you” we learn that there is no path to this transaction except the one Allah Himself has legislated; He alone points it out: “Shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment?”
This transaction is not a worldly trade, for dealings in this world may sometimes spare a person from painful punishment and may at other times become the very cause of it. A man who possesses wealth yet refuses to pay zakah will find that very fortune turned into a torment—may Allah protect us. Allah says, “Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend them in the way of Allah—give them tidings of a painful punishment: the Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and their foreheads, sides, and backs will be branded with it. ‘This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard’” (Qur’an 9:34–35). And He says, “Let not those who withhold what Allah has bestowed upon them out of His bounty think that it is good for them; rather, it is evil for them. They will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. To Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is All-Aware of what you do” (Qur’an 3:180).
Thus, worldly commerce may deliver one from punishment or cast one into it. The trade that Allah, exalted be He, offers us—and we ask Him to make us and you among those who accept it—is the one about which He says, “that will save you from a painful punishment,” meaning a punishment that is truly agonizing, for there is no
