—and Allah never fails to fulfill His promise.
Then He said, “So rejoice in the bargain you have concluded.” That is: let your hearts delight in it and convey glad tidings to one another. For this very reason Allah says, “Do not think of those who are slain in the path of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, provided for, rejoicing in what Allah has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they rejoice on behalf of those who have not yet joined them, that no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve.” They exult in this transaction—the magnificent sale you have entered into—and that is the ultimate triumph.
In the clause “that is the supreme triumph,” the pronoun functions as a separator (ḍamīr al-faṣl). Scholars note that this device yields three benefits: 1) exclusivity, 2) emphasis, and 3) distinguishing the predicate from an adjective. In other words, it signifies the one victory beyond compare. Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth. We ask Allah to make us among those who have sold themselves to Him. Allah is the One who grants success.
He, the Exalted, also said: “The believers who stay behind—other than those who are disabled—are not equal to those who strive in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has raised those who strive with their wealth and their lives above those who sit at home by one degree; yet to each Allah has promised the best reward. And Allah has favored those who strive over those who sit at home with a tremendous reward: ranks from Him, forgiveness, and mercy. And Allah is ever All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
