Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

The hadith of the man from Bahila is to the same effect. He had fasted an entire year, to the point that his appearance changed and his strength waned. When he came to the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—the Prophet asked, “Do I know you?” He replied, “Who are you?” The man said, “I am the Bahili who visited you last year.” He then explained what he had been doing and that he had not broken his fasting since leaving the Prophet’s company. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, “You have worn yourself out.” This demonstrates that it is not part of the Law for a person to impose on himself what he cannot bear or to punish himself, for Allah says, “Why should Allah punish you if you are grateful and believe? Allah is Ever Thankful, All-Knowing” (Q 4:147). And Allah is the one who grants success.
