1237 – Abū Ibrāhīm ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “We were travelling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was fasting. When the sun had set he said to one of the people, ‘So-and-so, dismount and prepare our drink.’ The man replied, ‘Messenger of Allah, would you not wait until it is fully evening?’ He said, ‘Dismount and prepare our drink.’ The man said, ‘But daylight still remains upon you.’ He repeated, ‘Dismount and prepare our drink.’ So the man dismounted, mixed the drink, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank. He then said, ‘When you see that night has advanced from this side, the fasting person has broken his fast,’ and he gestured with his hand toward the east.” Agreed upon.
His words “ijdah” — with the letters jīm, dāl, and hāʾ — mean: “mix the sawiq (powdered grain) with water.”
1238 – Salmān ibn ʿĀmir al-Ḍabbī, the Companion (may Allah be pleased with him), reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When one of you breaks his fast, let him do so with dates; if he cannot find any, then with water, for it is purifying.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic).
1239 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would break his fast with fresh dates before performing the prayer; if there were no fresh dates, then with dried dates; and if there were no dried dates, he would take a few sips of water.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan.
