Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

Paradise or to the Fire.

Accordingly, zakah is due on gold and silver themselves in every circumstance. Whether a person keeps them for daily spending, for marriage, to buy a house he needs to live in, to purchase a car he needs to ride, or he stores them simply to grow his wealth—or for any other purpose—zakah remains obligatory on them in all cases. Even a woman’s gold jewellery and silver ornaments that she wears are subject to zakah; it is required in every situation, provided that the minimum threshold (nisab) has been reached: for gold, eighty-five and a half grams; for silver, five hundred and ninety-five grams. If someone possesses at least that amount of silver or that amount of gold, zakah becomes incumbent upon him in every case. If he fails to pay it, his recompense is what the Prophet ﷺ mentioned: on the Day of Resurrection plates will be forged for him, not of gold and silver but of blazing fire—may Allah protect us—fiery plates that will be heated in Hell. Hellfire exceeds all the fires of this world by sixty-nine parts; every flame in this world, even natural-gas fires and those of the greatest intensity, are surpassed by Hellfire by sixty-nine additional parts. We ask Allah to shield us and you from it. Those plates will be heated in Hell, then his flank—meaning both his right and left sides—his forehead, that is, his face, and his back will be branded with them. The meaning is clear: whenever they cool, they will be reheated; they will not be allowed to cool and give him relief. Whenever they cool, they are reheated, throughout a Day whose span is fifty thousand years—not an hour or two, not a month or two, not a year or two, but fifty thousand years—while he suffers this torment, and we seek refuge with Allah, until judgment among the servants is concluded. Then he will be shown his path, either to Paradise or to the Fire. We ask Allah for safety and well-being.
