Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

As for the ḥadith of Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, it contains an addition to what has already been mentioned about establishing the prayer and paying the zakāh: namely, offering sincere counsel to every Muslim. A person must advise every Muslim, treating him as he treats himself and as he would like people to treat him. He must not revile him, slander him, deceive him, cheat him, or betray him; rather, he should be a well-wisher to him in every respect. When someone asks his advice, he is obliged to direct him to whatever is best for his religion and his worldly life.

It is related that when Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, may Allah be pleased with him, pledged this allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ—to give sincere counsel to every Muslim—he once bought a horse from a man for a certain price. After mounting it and seeing how fine the horse was, he went back to the seller and said, “Your horse is worth more than what I paid.” He then kept increasing the price for him until he had added an amount equal to the original price once or twice over, because he had pledged to the Prophet ﷺ to “offer sincere counsel to every Muslim.”

Accordingly, a person must maintain his kinship ties and be a sincere adviser to his Muslim brothers. In the ḥadith of Tamīm al-Dārī the Prophet ﷺ said three times, “Religion is sincere counsel.” They asked, “To whom?” He replied, “To Allah, to His Book, to His Messenger, to the leaders of the Muslims, and to their ordinary folk.” Allah is the One who grants success.

  1. Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “No owner of gold or silver who fails to pay its due right will escape; when the Day of Resurrection comes, plates of it will be prepared for him…”
