from the people of Najd, his hair unkempt. We could hear the hum of his voice but could not grasp what he was saying until he drew near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It then became clear that he was asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Five prayers in every day and night.” The man asked, “Am I obliged to perform anything in addition to them?” He replied, “No—unless you volunteer extra.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “And the fast of the month of Ramadan.” The man asked, “Am I obliged to do anything besides that?” He replied, “No—unless you volunteer extra.” Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned zakah. The man asked, “Am I obliged to give anything other than that?” He replied, “No—unless you volunteer extra.” The man turned away saying, “By Allah, I will neither add to this nor diminish from it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “He will prosper, if he is telling the truth.” Agreed upon. 1208 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ sent Muʿādh (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen and said, “Invite them to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. If they accept that, then inform them that Allah has made obligatory for them five prayers in every day and night. If they accept that, then inform them that Allah has prescribed for them a charity to be taken from their wealthy and returned to their poor.” Agreed upon.
